At the core, Hit Refresh, is about us humans and the unique quality we call empathy, which will become ever more valuable in a world where the torrent of technology will disrupt the status quo like never before.
Satya Nadella from Hit Refresh
Satya has charted a course for making the most of the opportunities created by technology while also facing up to the hard questions.
Bill Gates from the Foreword of Hit Refresh
Hit Refresh, a New York Times bestseller, is about personal change, the transformation taking place within Microsoft, and the technology that will soon have an impact on all of our lives—the arrival of the most exciting and disruptive wave of technology humanity has ever seen: artificial intelligence, mixed reality, and quantum computing. It's about how individuals, organizations, and communities can and must transform and "refresh" themselves in their never-ending search for new energy, new ideas, and continuous relevance and rejuvenation.
Microsoft's CEO traces his own personal journey from a childhood in India to overseeing some of the most major technological advancements in the digital era, telling the inside narrative of the company's ongoing evolution. Satya Nadella recounts his remarkable life in India before emigrating to the United States, as well as how he learnt to lead along the road. Following that, he reveals his musings as a sitting CEO—one who is mostly unknown in the wake of the brilliant Bill Gates and the vivacious Steve Ballmer. He shares the inside tale of how a corporation regained its spirit, affecting everything from culture to harsh competition and industry collaborations. Nadella, a humanist as well as an engineer and CEO, ends with his vision for the next wave of technology, addressing the possible influence on society and issuing a call to action to world leaders.
"Ideas thrill me," says Nadella. "Empathy gives me a sense of grounding and centering." Hit Refresh is a collection of musings, meditations, and recommendations provided as algorithms by a principled, deliberate leader looking for ways to improve himself, his organization, and society.
Satya Nadella is a husband, parent, and Microsoft's third chief executive officer in the company's 40-year existence.
Nadella moved to the United States from Hyderabad, India, on his 21st birthday to pursue a master's degree in computer science. He joined Microsoft in 1992, after stops in America's Rust Belt and Silicon Valley, to oversee a number of products and developments across the company's consumer and enterprise sectors. Nadella is widely regarded as a visionary, mission-driven leader who pushes the boundaries of technology while forging innovative and even surprising relationships with customers and partners throughout the world.
Nadella's life has been a journey of tremendous empathy for others, which he brings to everything he does, both personally and professionally. Nadella defines his aim and that of the company he leads as "empowering every person and every organization on the earth to achieve more," as much a humanist as an engineer and CEO. In addition to his work at Microsoft, Nadella is a member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Starbucks Board of Directors. Satya and his wife, Anu, donate their time and money to Seattle Children's Hospital and other organizations in the Seattle region that cater to the special needs of persons with disabilities.
