The author contends in this thought-provoking book that the connection between employees and employers—a relationship that both defines and drives the American workplace—is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Organizations that traditionally offered long-term job security and professional advancement are abandoning these programs in favor of market-based employment transactions such as short-term contracts, temporary staffing, and outsourcing.
Peter Cappelli examines contemporary advances in the workplace and challenges us to reconsider our long-held beliefs about human resource management. He explains that the new system pushes many of the risks of business from the employer to the employee, who must now take responsibility for their own professional development. How can firms keep the personnel they need and get the dedication and specialized skills that so many projects require when internal development programs are curtailed or non-existent?
Employees, managers, policymakers, and everyone interested in the market forces that drive the American workplace will find Cappelli's conclusions to be relevant and intriguing reading.
Peter Cappelli is the Director of Wharton's Center for Human Resources and the George W. Taylor Professor of Management at The Wharton School. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA, and a Distinguished Scholar of the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore since 2007. From 2003 to 2005, he worked as Senior Advisor to the Kingdom of Bahrain for Employment Policy. He holds degrees in industrial relations and labor economics from Cornell University and Oxford University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
